What is Cryptocurrency?

Modified on Mon, Apr 17, 2023 at 11:53 AM

Cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency that uses cryptography for security and operates independently of a central bank or government. It uses a decentralized system, meaning that it is not controlled by any central authority, and transactions are verified and recorded through a public ledger called a blockchain.

Cryptocurrencies are created through a process called mining, which involves using powerful computers to solve complex mathematical problems. Once a problem is solved, new units of the currency are released and added to the blockchain.

The most well-known cryptocurrency is Bitcoin, which was created in 2009. Since then, thousands of other cryptocurrencies have been created, including Ethereum, Ripple, and Litecoin.
